Healthy Eating PDF Print

At Grange Primary School we aim to promote healthy eating. When we don't eat enough of the right foods, especially when we are still growing, it can be difficult to concentrate carefully on our work and behave appropriately.

It is really important that we all have a sensible breakfast before we begin school to make sure that our bodies are fully fuelled before we start working. We run a breakfast club at school, where children can be dropped off early, have breakfast and take part in activities with their friends.

For more details, please contact the school office.

Water
It is also very important that we drink lots of water in order to keep our bodies hydrated. Each child in school is given a pop top water bottle that can be refilled thoughout the day from the water fountains that are plumbed in around school. If you send your child to school with an alternative bottle, please ensure that it has a pop top to help us to avoid spillages!

Fruit
The experts tell us that we should eat at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day. Each child in reception and years 1 and 2 are given a free piece of fruit through the government scheme, but we also have fruit on sale. Key Stage 1 children can buy their fruit before school from the fruit trolley and Key stage 2 children are able to buy cups of pre-cut fruit at breaktime. A whole piece, or a cup of fruit costs 20p. Obviously children can also bring in their own fruit and vegetables to eat as a breaktime snack. However, in line with our healthy eating policy children can not bring any other form of snack food. Please note that many packaged fruit products contain high levels of sugar and additives and so snacks must be in the form of fresh or plain dried fruit.

Toast
We also have toast on sale at breaktime for Key Stage 2 children, who can buy a token first thing in the morning and then use it to buy their hot toast at breaktime. Toast costs 10p and children are responsible for their own money and toast tokens. Toast is a fantastic way to increase brain activity with a vital boost of carbohydrate!

Milk
Children can also enjoy the benefits of a cold carton of milk at breaktime. It is simple to arrange for your child to have milk. Please contact the office for further details.

Lunch
Our lunches are supplied by the hardworking kitchen staff and are cooked on site in the school kitchens. There is always an option for fruit or salad with a meal. Children who choose to bring packed lunches are also encouraged to eat healthily and as such we do not allow fizzy drinks in school. Every day the staff on duty in the dining room look out for children who have made healthier choices in their lunch and congratulate them.

This is a pyramid of healthy eating, which helps to see how our portions of food should be balanced. We have developed our own chart to help us remember what types of food we shoule be including in our lunchboxes. this forms part of our lunchbox policy.

Please use the link below to see a copy of our lunchbox policy.
